Phyaslis Slows Breast Cancer Growth by 75% in Vivo: Natural compounds found in the physalis fruit were shown to slow breast tumor growth in mice by 75% after 6 weeks. 

And in test tubes, they virtually wiped out the breast cancer cells completely. Incredibly, the compounds—called withanolides—killed the cancer cells more effectively than three standard chemo drugs, according to the researchers. Physalis fruit is now under intense research to develop future cancer treatments because its withanolides have also been shown to potently kill a variety of other cancer cells (lung, prostate, melanoma, colon, leukemia…). 

They do this by a unique two-pronged attack: first they accelerate production of damaging free-radicals in the cancer cells, then they block the action of HSP90 (heat shock protein 90) which cancer cells need to protect themselves from those free radicals. 

In short, the cancer cells have little chance of survival. Physalis is grown mainly in tropical regions but is readily available as fresh in many large grocery stores (and is currently in season) and also as dried fruit throughout the year. Phyaslis is also known as ground cherry or cape gooseberry.
