This house on Main Street in Wilbraham

This house on Main Street in Wilbraham, Massachusetts is best known for having been the home of Timothy Merrick, who was the last recorded snakebite fatality in Massachusetts. The house in the first photo was built in 1761 for the 22-year-old Merrick, who was engaged to be married. However, while working in the fields across from the house in August 1761, he was bit by a rattlesnake, and he died several hours later.

The first photo was taken around the late 1800s, and the house stood here until 1955, when it burned down. It was subsequently replaced with a modern house, as shown in the second photo.
