Epirus of the 4th century BC, was an ancient Greek kingdom on the northwestern border of Ancient Greece.
The ancient Epirotian coins (4th BC to 1st BC century) bear the inscription APIROTAN, i.e. of EPIROTS. Conceptually it means vast state "INFINITE LAND". Etymologically it is derived from apiros and according to one version the word EPIROS comes from APIROTAN.
Epirus (they had close relations with the neighboring Macedonian kingdom) during Antiquity extended from today's Preveza south to the Egnatia Roman road, i.e. the river Genousos, which passes through Elbasan, Albania. This follows from a text by the geographer Strabo.
The three main tribes that inhabited the area were the Chaones in the northwest, the Molossians in the center and the Thesprotes in the south.
A distinguished royal family that emerged during the late classical era were the Aiakids, from the Molossian tribe. The famous king known as Pyrrhus of Epirus, the so-called "Eagle of Epirus" was also a member of it.
During the Hellenistic period, the form of government changed to a republic, until the occupation of the region by the Romans. Famous ancient cities of Northern Epirus (territory of today's Albania) were Apollonia, Phoenice, Epidamnos, and Bouthroton.
With the Roman conquest of 168 BC. and in 146 BC it was permanently annexed under the Latin name Epirus Vetus.
The construction of Egnatia Road gave further impetus to commercial and economic activity.

Ήπειρος του του 4ου αιώνα π.χ, ήταν αρχαίο ελληνικό βασίλειο στο βορειοδυτικό σύνορο της Αρχαίας Ελλάδας.
Τα αρχαία Ηπειρωτικά νομίσματα (4ου π.χ. έως 1ου π.χ. αι.) φέρουν την επιγραφή ΑΠΕΙΡΩΤΑΝ, δηλ. των ΗΠΕΙΡΩΤΩΝ. Εννοιολογικά σημαίνει απέραντο κράτος "ΑΠΕΙΡΟΣ ΧΩΡΑ". Ετυμολογικά παράγεται απ’ το άπειρος και κατά μία εκδοχή η λέξη ΗΠΕΙΡΟΣ προέρχεται απ’ το ΑΠΕΙΡΩΤΑΝ.
Η Ήπειρος (είχαν στενές σχέσεις με το γειτονικό Μακεδονικό βασίλειο) κατά την Αρχαιότητα εκτεινόταν από τη σημερινή Πρέβεζα νοτίως έως την Εγνατία ρωμαϊκή οδό, δηλαδή τον ποταμό Γενούσο, που περνάει από το Ελμπασάν της Αλβανίας. Αυτό προκύπτει από κείμενο του γεωγράφου Στράβωνα.
Οι τρεις βασικές φυλές που κατοίκησαν την περιοχή ήταν οι Χάονες στα βορειοδυτικά, οι Μολοσσοί στο κέντρο και οι Θεσπρωτοί στο νότο.
Διακεκριμένη βασιλική οικογένεια που εμφανίστηκε κατά την ύστερη κλασική εποχή ήταν οι Αιακίδες, από τη φυλή των Μολοσσών. Μέλος της ήταν και ο διάσημος βασιλιάς που είναι γνωστός ως Πύρρος της Ηπείρου, ο επονομαζόμενος "Αετός της Ηπείρου".
Κατά την ελληνιστική περίοδο η μορφή διακυβέρνησης μετατράπηκε σε δημοκρατία, μέχρι την κατάληψη της περιοχής από τους Ρωμαίους. Διάσημες αρχαίες πόλεις της Βόρειας Ηπείρου (έδαφος σημερινής Αλβανίας) ήταν η Απολλωνία, η Φοινίκη, η Επίδαμνος, και το Βουθρωτόν.
Με τη ρωμαϊκή κατάκτηση του 168 π.Χ. και το 146 π.Χ. προσαρτήθηκε οριστικά με το Λατινικό όνομα Epirus Vetus.
Η κατασκευή της Εγνατίας Οδού, έδωσε περαιτέρω ώθηση στην εμπορική και οικονομική δραστηριότητα.
