In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the agreement was reached following a phone conversation between Foreign Affairs Secretary Theresa Lazaro and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Iran committed to allow the “safe, unhindered, and expeditious passage” of Philippine-flagged vessels, including energy shipments, as well as Filipino seafarers transiting the area.
The development is seen as critical for the Philippines, as it helps ensure both the safety of Filipino crew members and the continued flow of oil supplies to the country. The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital but volatile chokepoint, with global shipments disrupted due to ongoing conflict, prompting countries to seek diplomatic arrangements for safe transit.
